____________
IS
THAT A PODCAST IN YOUR POCKET? (or I THINK I HEAR A BANDWAGON COMING!
HOP ON!)
Podcast-mania
is sweeping the nation and considering I didn't know what a podcast was
just a few months ago, I should probably explain for the less tech-savvy
members of our list. Podcasting stems from a program called iPodder (ipodder.org)
developed by ex-MTV VJ Adam Curry and a group of programmers. Its only
purpose is to download audio files, usually mp3's, directly to your mp3
device (not just iPods!) or to your computer (Windows or Mac). You can
use iPodder (or other audio aggregators) to subscribe to a set of feeds
that automatically downloads the podcasts you have subscribed to as new
ones are posted.
As
most of you know, we've advocated letting the music sell itself for years
now through the use of our free CD samplers and free mp3 tracks posted
on the site. The only drawbacks are that the mp3's posted on our band
pages tend to mostly reach people who're already familiar with the band
in question while the samplers are a one shot deal because of the cost
involved (we spend thousands of dollars every year mailing these to places
all over the world in order to reach new ears including to countries where
our releases are not widely available - no, we're not all completely profit-driven).
The podcast solves both problems and even allows me to speak to you folks
directly.
We've
already got four podcasts in the bag, but worry not as I've kept all four
live until I was able to formally announce them.
The
address (aka feed) to paste into your aggregator (like iPodder) is: http://www.absolutelykosher.com/podcasts/dircaster.php
If
you want to read up on our podcast or manually download the large mp3
files yourself, visit us at http://absolutelykosher.blogspot.com/
And
while you're out and about and surfing en vogue, you can visit our My
Space page. Not much to look at yet, but give us a minute. We'll be
your friend.

LOVE
IS IN THE AIR
The
Dudley Corporation- In Love With The
Corpo just finished two weeks on the road with Pinback and returned
home to Ireland for a breather before their follow-up U.S. tour in August.
Now, you'll frequently catch me chatting up our fine releases with what
some might term hyperbole. It's always nice to hear that other folks feel
the same way about our releases and generally even nicer when it comes
from our friends at Pitchfork. Sometimes they get it wrong. The person
who reviewed the new Dudley Corporation for them callously assumed that
because the band is Irish and writing about sin, that the there must be
some Catholic guilt involved (Dudley is Protestant and not particularly
religious). He mentions Mogwai guitars (um, what?) and calls the Corpo's
frequent time/tempo/volume changes an "anti-formula-formula."
(Hey man, that first Heavy Vegetable album is more than a decade old -
get schooled.) The behind-the-curtain details of this review are that
at least three other Pitchfork writers expressed interest in writing it,
but it got assigned to, um, the wrong guy. Sometimes things work out this
way and while it may be gauche and violate record label etiquette to bring
it up here with you, the nearly 20,000 people on our mailing list, I feel
that overlooking a half-assed mediocre Pitchfork review is like ignoring
the elephant (with bad gas) in the room. For
a much more thoughtful perspective on this record and a number of others,
we'd very much like to introduce you to a fantastic site from the Netherlands
called Incendiary located at www.incendiarymag.com. It's been a long
time since we've been to a site with such consistently inspiring writing
and perspective (and it sure helps that they like our records). This
Transform Online review didn't hurt either. We've also got some beautiful
new Dudley Corporation t-shirts for sale. In Love With
The Dudley Corporation is in stores now.

Sparrow
- The Early Years
Sparrow's glittering new album is in stores now, just in time for Jason
Zumpano and the gang to hit the road for a string of West Coast dates
opening for Enon and Thunderbirds Are Now! and a few more in the Midwest
supporting the Wrens (with Get Him Eat Him rounding out the bills). While
Sparrow hits new pop heights with The
Early Years, J.Z.
is not a man to rest on his laurels and is already working on new material
for their next record. Until
then, you can catch the band in full stride, successfully blending the
gentler sound of the last Sparrow album with the upbeat pop rush of the
work of his previous band, Zumpano. There is a newfound confidence in
Jason's voice as he sings in a higher register, adding a wonderfully vibrant
dynamic to the work. The album's title track alone is clearly the work
of a master craftsman and the band's finest work to date. Go. See. Bop.

Okay
- Low Road &
High Road
I am extremely happy to report that Okay will be touring
the West Coast in September, including two days with Xiu Xiu in Portland
and Seattle. We'll have confirmed dates next update, but we're so excited,
we had to share the news with you. I saw Marty at Pinback's incredible
Fillmore show and he said he's feeling better than ever and he looks great
too. Low Road/High Road have already made a few critics' mid-year top
ten lists. Also of note, filmmaker Christopher Arcella made an awesome
short film/video for the song "Game" here: http://www.christopherarcella.com/videos/game.htm
