Pinback

Pinback formed in 1998 in San Diego, California; the key players, Crow and Smith, were both in other prominent local bands at the time. The ever-prolific Crow had played in Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, Optiganally Yours & Physics (several of which had gone on hiatus or were more open-ended projects than bands), and Smith was on break with 3 Mile Pilot (while bandmate Pall Jenkins concentrated on the Black Heart Procession). The duo recorded their first eponymous album, released in 1999 by Ace Fu, also known as This is a Pinback CD..

In 2000, Pinback released the Some Voices EP (Tree Records, reissued in 2002 by Absolutely Kosher). Critics claimed the band was entering uncharted territory and praised Pinback for their originality. With the subsequent release of Blue Screen Life in 2001 on Ace Fu Records, the indie-rock community was in agreement that Pinback had transcended genre placement: a rare honor for artists surrounded by a critical world obsessed with words like twee, emo, and anything ending in 'core'. The band followed the release of the album with a number of sold-out tours.

Offcell, with it's gentle melodies and catchy hooks, soon followed to great critical acclaim. In 2004 Summer in Abaddon was released, cementing any final lingering doubts of the band's place in the indie rock hall of fame.

A five song EP that runs nearly tirty minutes long, recorded the year after Blue Screen Life was released. We waited and waited and waited for this one and it was well worth it as Pinback releases their best record yet. Just when you thought a great band couldn't get any better, they raise the bar with this. Amazing stuff. Includes the title track, live favorite "Victorius D," new live favorite "Microtonic Wave," the ultra groovy "B" and the soul-filled instant classic "Grey - Machine." (AK025)

The second full length from the dynamic duo of Rob Crow (Thingy, Optiganally Yours, Heavy Vegetable) and Armistead B. Smith IV (Three Mile Pilot). Ace Fu says, "As with previous Pinback releases, the duo's propensity for thoughtful instrumentation and dense layering of melodies is remarkably unique and nothing short of beautiful. Every song on Blue Screen Life holds muted harmonies, hypnotic rhythms and lush orchestration that subtly resonate long after one listen. The duo trade vocals as with comfort, poise and precision. Yet, despite all of the underlying complexities in Pinback's music their songs somehow always seem sincere, honest and simply dreamy. Blue Screen Life shows the band's most creative and focused direction as a collaborative effort. The songs have a new energy and vibrancy about them which carries this record into new artistic terrain; terrain which will no doubt be charted by Pinback for others to only admire and attempt to emulate."

Posthumous collection of out-takes, b-sides, live recordings and covers. Unlike many odds & sods CD's, this is not "for fans only," as they say. The acapella version of "Love American Style" alone makes this collection essential. Includes covers by Klark Kent and the Residents. On Headhunter/Cargo.
Three Mile Pilot - Another Desert, Another Sea
CD - $12.00

Ryan Craven of the Jim Yoshii Pile-Up swears that this is one of the greatest albums ever. He says that it's fantastic on the first listen and after the 25th or so listen, it becomes godlike. I am, admittedly, a more recent convert, but I am inclined to give his claim creedence. It's clear here how both Pinback and Black Heart Procession came to be, but there's an urgency here, a potent yet tragic sexuality that makes this record unique. Great stuff. On Headhunter/Cargo.
Three Mile Pilot - Another Desert, Another Sea

Three Mile Pilot - Chief Assassin To The Sinister
CD - $12.00

 Temporarily Unavailable
Artist Direct says, "Three Mile Pilot have recorded an overwhelming clarion call to the next generation of music beyond "alternative" -- cautionary yet hopeful, discordant yet inviting, powerful and hypnotic." Chapter two in an enthralling and compelling saga. This is not the major label version. On Headhunter/Cargo.
Three Mile Pilot - Na Vucca Do Lupu
CD - $12.00

 Temporarily Unavailable
All Music Guide says, "Na Vucca Do Lupu is a semi-remarkable release for 1992 the band's guitar-less lineup keeps it from falling into any of the sounds that were quickly becoming cliches in the early '90s, using robust bass work to fill the gaps instead." On Headhunter/Cargo.
