Frog Eyes present two newly re-imagined versions of "Policy Merchant"and "Stockades" from their stellar 2007 release Tears of the Valedictorian, this time including fellow Victorian Ryan Beattie (of Chet and Himalayan Bear) into their roster. Hello Blue Roses is the collaborative effort of Dan Bejar (more famously of Destroyer and New Pornographers) and singer Sydney Vermont. The two tracks on the single are a cover of "Foam Hands," a song from Destroyer's Trouble In Dreams album (with Sydney singing rather than Dan) and a cover of Richard and Linda Thompson's "Wall of Death." Every Frog Eyes album is an exercise in entropy, disintegrating as it overwhelms you with its size, but The Folded Palm is positively shattering in its decay and titanic in its stature. Frog Eyes is like no band you ever heard, but there's a good chance that if you like Xiu Xiu, old Bowie or Captain Beefheart, you won't be disappointed. Absolutely stunning. The eleven song Ego Scriptor (which is Latin for "I am the writer") CD will feature Frog Eyes frontman Carey Mercer performing solo acoustic versions of songs off of the band's two previous albums, The Golden River and The Bloody Hand, as well as a few from the band's forthcoming album, The Folded Palm (tentatively slated for release on September 14, 2004). Blackout Beach is the solo vehicle for Carey Mercer, the head howler and songwriter for the wonderful and mysterious Frog Eyes. Like his work with Frog Eyes, these Blackout Beach songs are intense, miniature epics filled with decadent imagery and dark paths. Some might fence Mercer into the 'new weird folk' movement, but his songs are filled with more conviction, agitation and true sonic experimentation than all of those other folkies combined. Light Flows The Putrid Dawn is an atmospheric song cycle (in fourteen parts) that touches on a wide range of emotions, and an even wider range of song structure and arrangements. The album is more filled out and a bit more abstract/spacious than the recent limited Frog Eyes acoustic album, Ego Scriptor. Awesome stuff. On the fine Soft Abuse imprint.
